The soul versus the self – a poem.

I was going to make this poem as part of the ‘speak out’ project I have been trying to work on for the past few months.

That has fallen flat, and honestly, I do not know where this poem belongs!

It is definitely different to my usual work, however, given the current social and political climate, I hope that it can resonate with you. Based on your unique interpretations of the events at hand, and your personal experiences, it may translate totally differently between persons. The point is that the essence, and the urgency of the piece weighs on you, in some capacity. And of course, the rest of the interpretation of this work is entirely left up to you, the reader.

In other words, happy reading! ❤

Because what is a job, but a title?

Because what is money, but a vexation of the spirit?

Because what is vanity?

But for an obsession over the things you cannot change,

Or,

Wanting more

Than you can receive.

The hedonism;

The greed.

Because what is life without love, without peace?

Because –

What does it mean to be alive,

Without harmony?

Because what is perfection, without flaws?

Why should you be ashamed?

Be grateful for the duality, but – know this, please:

What cannot be given to mankind is that very perfection we try to chase, or,

Erase – precisely because we cannot have it.

We are this way,

Because of our condition.

To want, to pursue, to be crazed by lust: an endless desire.

To refuse to change; to be merciless, to be crude, complacent, arrogant

The insanity,

Is that we are enigmatic; confusing, like the words on this page.

To be flawed is to accept why you are the way you will always be

But to be better is a lifelong aim, you see that

You should strive to be better.

You ask, ‘even in the face of adversity?’

But you misunderstand me,

you always strive for the dream home, the ultimate car,

Your perception, of overcoming your suffering – is:

‘I want to keep going, until I claim the moon

 And the stars’.

You may never stop until you claim the world.

It is admirable, it is foolish:

We strive to be what we are not; or nothing at all – whatever we think we want to be,

‘Because what is our purpose, but a lifelong burden?’ , or

A meaningless dream.

But for one’s soul who is lacking food –

The fat stomach is deceiving the mind who tells it, it needs more.

But for one’s soul who is lacking redemption

We fall into the depths, of the famine of faithlessness, our body begging to be

Reborn,

To ascend,

And once again,

Become perfect.

end.
